Conservation and the Environment

Check out the Watershed Model that I want to buy for teaching kids about watersheds! Anybody have $1,214.00 to donate to the Gratiot Conservation District so that I can start teaching the middle and high schoolers of Gratiot County?

As the Administrator of the Gratiot Conservation District, I'm always looking for way to increase awareness and understanding of environmental issues. Some of the projects our conservation team is working on include:

Developing a Watershed Management Plan
Assisting local farmers in the process of getting verified through the Michigan Agriculture Environmental Assurance Program (MAEAP)
Assisting with the development of Conservation Plans through one of our many Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) programs
Helping landowners identify and rid their properties of invasive species and pests
Helping with soil erosion control plans
Providing rental of our No-till Drill and Native Grass Drill
Increasing awareness of groundwater stewardship
Working with Pheasants Forever and Michigan Department of Agriculture to restore wildlife habitat
Increasing awareness of the need for a County-wide recycling program (with the eventual goal of implementing one)
Teaching kids at the local schools about conservation efforts and how they can get involved

Check out our website at the Gratiot Conservation District here and let me know what you think. Do you have any suggestions of how we can better serve the people of the central Michigan area? What's your opinion? -Julie

Also, check out the article that I wrote about the wind farm activity in Gratiot County. It was published in three local papers! Two more wind farms are in the works for our area. I'll get details as soon as I can. What's your opinion about the wind farms? -Julie
