Buxton Peak: London Bridges Chapter Two: Tulips and Ivy

“I want to know all about Vanessa,” Andy said, taking a sip of his ice water.

He looked across the table to the elegant bar situated in the center of the restaurant. Andy had forgotten how much it dominated the main dining area at The Ivy. Crystal glasses hung from racks, glittering in the soft overhead lighting.
If only one of those crystal glasses could be sitting in front of him filled with a fine wine, or better yet, a nice glass of scotch over ice. Stop it, Andy!
Being a recovering addict was never easy, but sitting at a table overlooking a bar stocked with every imaginable delicacy was almost more than he could bear.
He turned his head and gave Vanessa his full attention. “What do you do when you’re not on holiday in London, toying with the hearts of unsuspecting rock stars?”
“Toying?” Vanessa placed her hand in front of her mouth, feigning shock at his accusation. “You make me sound so vindictive.”
“Well, aren’t you?” Andy leaned closer and lowered his head to look her in the eye. “Toying with me?”
“I’m merely enjoying a lovely day of shopping with a handsome man, and a fine dinner at his favorite restaurant.” She lowered her eyes and pouted in true Southern-belle fashion. “Although, I am disappointed that you never took me to see the garden.”
“The garden?” Andy cocked his head to the side.
“Yes, you said we were going to visit the Covent Garden.”
“We’ve been here all day,” Andy said.
“Where are the flowers?”
“They stopped selling flowers in the 1970s, I think.”
“Then why do they call it a garden?” Vanessa asked.
“Because…” Andy stammered on his words. “I dunno. That’s just what it’s called. This area used to be well-known for its wholesale flowers. Now it’s just a very large shopping area, but it used to supply flowers to the whole country.”
“Well, I’ll expect you to bring me flowers the next time you take me on a date. It’s only fair since you didn’t bring me to a garden.”
“I suppose that can be arranged.” Andy reached over and took her hand, giving it a little squeeze. “But first I need to know about you. For starters, what’s your favorite flower?”
“That is for you to figure out.” Vanessa walked her fingers up his arm and then poked him on his lips. Two lips? Maybe she likes tulips!
“Okay, no more stalling,” Andy scolded her. “Tell me more about Vanessa. Do you have a job?”
“Yes, I do.” Vanessa batted her eyelashes.
“You’re not going to make me guess that too. Are you?” Oh, crap. Another ‘yes’ or ‘no’ question. “Let me rephrase that. What do you do for a living?”
“I’m a hairstylist.” Vanessa reached across and laced her fingers into Andy’s hair. He almost moaned audibly. “And I am dying to get my hands on that mop of yours!”
“Mop?” Andy feigned insult. “I am a rock star. There is nothing wrong with me having long hair.”
“How long has it been since a stylist has gotten her hands on you?” Vanessa raised her eyebrows.
“About fifteen seconds ago, and I wish she’d put her hands right back into my hair.”
“I will not touch your hair again until I have a pair of scissors in my hand,” she said.
Andy looked around as if to find a pair of scissors.
“And before you get any ideas about asking our waiter for a pair of scissors, I’ll add a caveat. I will not cut your hair unless you are sitting in my salon… in Nashville.”
“What time does our flight leave, again?” Andy leaned forward and rested his elbow on the table, staring intently into Vanessa’s eyes.
“My flight leaves in two days, well,” Vanessa looked at her watch, “a day and a half, actually.”
“Well then, you’re going to have to go out with me again tomorrow,” Andy said.
“Why’s that?”
“Because I haven’t had a chance to kiss you yet.”
“Is that so?” Vanessa leaned forward on her elbow opposite him and smirked. Her face was close enough to his that it would have taken little effort to close the distance and connect. But he didn’t. Torturing her was almost as much fun as her torturing him.
“Do you folks need a few more minutes with the menus?” their server interrupted. Andy and Vanessa didn’t flinch.
“I think I’ve decided what I want….” Andy said.
“I’ll bet you have,” Vanessa drawled in her adorable Southern accent. She broke eye contact first and smiled sweetly at the server. “What would you suggest? What’s your favorite thing on the menu?”
“Uh…” The server cleared his throat and gulped, clearly affected by her flirting. Andy almost laughed out loud, glad he wasn’t the only man in the room completely entranced with Vanessa. “Well, we’re famous for our Shepherd’s Pie.”
“I don’t really care what you’re famous for,” Vanessa said, waving her hand dismissively. “I wanna know what’s your favorite.”
“I really love the seared scallops.” The waiter smiled down at Vanessa and then glanced at Andy and looked away.
“Then that is what I’ll have.” Vanessa sat back and crossed her arms, winking over at Andy. He didn’t release her gaze as he gave his request to the server.
“I’d like a steak, medium rare.”
“Ribeye, fillet, or sirloin?”
“Fillet,” Andy said. “No… ribeye. No, fillet. Yeah, I’ll stick with a fillet.”
“I thought you said you already knew what you wanted.” Vanessa raised her eyebrows.
“For dinner, I want a fillet.” Andy felt Vanessa’s foot tickle his calf muscle under the table, and he almost jumped out of his chair. He cleared his throat and looked up at the server. “With heritage potatoes, please.”
“As you wish, sir.” The waiter scribbled on his little pad of paper.
Andy shook his head infinitesimally and smirked at Vanessa.
“Would the two of you like any starters?”
“Want to try the fried duck egg?” Andy asked Vanessa.
“That sounds disgusting.” Vanessa’s sweet tone could have easily substituted ‘delightful’ for ‘disgusting’ and not miss a beat.
“How about a nice spinach salad?” Andy suggested.
“Much better,” she said.
When the server was finished getting all the details for their selections of dressings and sides, he offered them the perfect wine to go with their choices of meals. Andy politely declined, and the man left them alone.
“You are in so much trouble, you little vixen,” Andy murmured, a cheesy grin hovering on his face. “You are going to be the death of me.”
“Well, I wouldn’t want to kill you,” Vanessa said, placing her hands in her lap and sitting up straight. “You haven’t even kissed me yet.”
“I’m afraid to kiss you now.”
Vanessa’s expression shifted from teasing to smoldering. “You won’t be when the time is right.”
This time when Andy fought to stay in his seat, it wasn’t due to shock but pure emotional desire. He knew in that moment he was no longer tempted by anything behind that bar. All he wanted was to see her soft smile across the table for the rest of his life.

Buxton Peak Book One: Who Is Ian Taylor by Julie Spencer - Excerpt from Chapter One

Passing Through

When he sat down in the pew across from her in the chapel, his flirtatious grin and gleaming eyes caught Megan’s attention almost as quickly as his spiked, messy hairdo. The purposeful randomness of the blond highlights hinted he’d had them done professionally, yet she sensed he wanted it to look as if he’d just rolled out of bed. He stole her focus away from the prelude music as if he’d called her name.
Her intuition warned her that he was more than what he seemed. He would have fit better on the cover of a magazine, than sitting across the aisle from her in church. He exuded confidence and raised his eyebrows at her, a secret smile on his lips that made her blush. She quickly looked down at her open hymnbook trying to distract herself. It didn’t work. She glanced over at him out of the corner of her eye.
His larger friend elbowed him and he turned in his seat to face forward. Megan took the opportunity to study the odd pair. Although they both seemed to be about her age, they didn’t look like typical college guys. An air of dominance emanated from the friend, although it could have been because he looked like a body builder. Yet, there was something else. A hint of inferiority perhaps? Like the smaller of the two was somehow in charge. Weird.
Megan couldn’t concentrate on anything during the service because she couldn’t stop wondering about him. Does he live here? Megan had never seen him before in all the times she’d visited her aunt’s house. She wished Aunt Pat had come to church with her so she could ask her if he was a regular. She’d always wished her aunt would come to church so she didn’t have to sit alone. This congregation had so few people in attendance that the room seemed empty. The ward she attended in Mt. Pleasant, where she was a student at Central Michigan University, had three times this many attendees. She had felt quite alone before these two mysterious guys sat down in the pew opposite hers.
Still, she knew she’d never be able to gather enough courage to go and meet them. She was a geek. Boring. Hot guys wouldn’t want to talk to her anyway.
Yet, he did. Almost as soon as the closing prayer had ended, she felt his presence by her side. When she turned to look at him, she couldn’t turn away. Wow, he smells good.
He sat and grinned at her, but didn’t say a word. His playful blue eyes were even more captivating up-close. For a moment, Megan stared back, but quickly grew uncomfortable with the intimacy of the situation. She sat with her hands in her lap shaking a little from the unsettling feeling that her life was about to change. She had never had a boyfriend, and didn’t really want a boyfriend. However, he was attractive and had a friendly smile. Finally, curiosity overpowered her nervousness.
“Can I help you?” Megan blurted out. Whoops. A bit harsh. Darn shyness; it always came across as snobby. Ugh.
“I just wanted to come meet you.” His British accent startled her. She didn’t expect that from a guy in northern Michigan. She waited for him to continue with an introduction but his comment hung in the air.
“And…you are?” Megan raised her eyebrows.
“Oh, I’m sorry. I thought you knew me.” He cocked his head as if surprised she didn’t recognize him. Megan couldn’t help thinking he was presumptuous and cocky. She shrugged, waiting for him to complete his response. “I’m Ian Taylor.”
Am I supposed to be impressed? She shook her head slightly and shrugged her shoulders again. He seemed amused and actually laughed. She turned her head away and raised her chin, offended that he was making fun of her.
“Sorry if I seemed rude.” Ian leaned forward, trying to get her attention again. “Could I ask, what is your name?” He sounded sincere. She couldn’t help glancing back toward him.
“Megan Moeggenberg.” She bit her lower lip and silently cursed all those young women’s etiquette classes that taught her to introduce herself to others. What was I thinking? Okay, so he’s handsome and mysterious and I’m trying really hard not to smile at him, but he’s a stranger. And I just told him my full name.
“That is a very unique name.” Oh my gosh, his British accent is adorable.
“Not where I’m from.” She tried to force away the smile that threatened the corners of her mouth. “There are about a hundred of us in the central Michigan area.”
“You don’t live here?” He shook his head slightly.
            “No, just passing through.”
“Myself as well.” Ian nodded. “What a coincidence we should be here at the same time.” He grinned at her as if implying that they were destined to meet.
Megan shook her head, finally smiling. Once she allowed it, she couldn’t stop smiling. He was enthralling and distracting, but not what she wanted in her life. She thought coming to Aunt Pat’s beach house at Houghton Lake would get her away from the single life as a college student. It was supposed to be a nice quiet place where she didn’t have to worry about people judging her choice to wait until she graduated to start dating and to wait until marriage before becoming intimate with a man.
The girls at the university dated, or wanted to date, or talked about guys, or speculated about who they might meet at the bar that weekend. Guys at the college usually wanted one thing, and all too often, the girls were the same way. Spend the night together now; decide in the morning if they wanted to exchange phone numbers. Megan didn’t want any part of it. She especially didn’t want to meet a guy who was looking for a one-night stand, not even someone who wanted to get serious and start a family. She just wasn’t in that place in her life yet.
Still, if she was going to meet a guy, church wasn’t a bad place. If he would be leaving as quickly as he had come, then it wouldn’t hurt to laugh a bit and maybe even flirt back a little?
“Where are you passing through from?
“Well, last night we drove through the Upper Peninsula of the great State of Michigan.”
“And prior to that?” She smiled.
“I think we were in Wisconsin.” He cocked his head playfully as if he had to think about his recent travels.
“And where are you going?”
“I believe by tomorrow or the next day, we will be in Detroit, and then I’ll be flying back across the pond.” Megan raised her eyebrows at the colloquial use of “pond” to represent the Atlantic Ocean.
“Sounds like you have your life all planned out.” Megan complimented him.
“Not really.” Ian laughed. “Jeremy does the planning. I just go where I’m told.” From his commanding persona, she somehow doubted that anyone told him what to do.
Megan looked up at the hunk standing in the aisle next to Ian, assuming he was Jeremy. Although not exactly frowning, he had his arms folded across his chest, his eyebrows furled. His stance was almost protective or defensive. He was intimidating despite his rugged handsomeness.
“Oh, my apologies.” He turned to his friend, then back to her. “I failed to introduce my mate. This is Ed.” Ed lifted his chin without so much as a smile or salutation. She would have reached out to shake his hand if he hadn’t sent such cold vibes her way.
If this was Ed, then who was Jeremy? That meant there was another person traveling with them. Where was he?
“Jeremy doesn’t like to come to church with you?” she asked.
“None of them do.” He averted his eyes, then changed the subject. “Do you want to go get some lunch?”
“Uh…it’s Sunday.” Megan raised her eyebrows at him. “I try not to go out to eat on Sundays, you know…to observe the Sabbath.”
“Well, where are you staying?”
“My aunt’s house.” She hesitated, not wanting to give away too much information to this guy she just met. She contemplated what he meant by “none of them” because that meant there were more than three of them traveling together. How many are in his group? Megan tried to keep track of everything, but he changed the subject again.
“Does your aunt live near the water?” Ian craned his neck, looking toward the window as if he could see the lake from here. “I want to see the water.”
“Didn’t you pass it on the way to the chapel?” She knew from either direction he entered the small town of Houghton Lake, the main road followed the shoreline.
“Yes, but Ed was driving too fast. I want to walk along the beach. When am I ever going to have this chance again?”
“I don’t know.” She cocked her head. “How soon will you be coming back to northern Michigan?”
“I have no idea.” Ian chuckled. “If it were up to me, I’d stay and get to know this beautiful girl I just met at church.”
Megan pretended to look around the building for some other girl their age as if she didn’t know Ian was talking about her. The congregation at Houghton Lake was so small there were barely enough people to keep the doors open. From years of visiting her aunt, she knew this time of year, before the summer season actually started, that there were even fewer people, and they were mostly older. Knowing she was the only college-age girl in the building, it felt a little like Ian was settling for an opportunistic individual. She had never thought of herself as pretty, much less beautiful. Still, she kind of liked his flirting and reminded herself to just enjoy it.
She suddenly felt very little apprehension about bringing Ian home to meet her aunt and uncle. He didn’t seem like the type of guy to stalk her or take advantage of her, and he did have a friend with him. It wasn’t as if she was inviting him home to an empty house with no chaperones.
“My aunt lives across the street from the lake,” she said. “And there’s a little park where we could take a walk after lunch.”
“That sounds great.” Ian took her suggestion as an invitation, stood up and took a few steps back, waiting like a gentleman for her to grab her bags and scoot to the edge of the pew and out into the aisle.
Ed pulled Ian aside and spoke quietly about a text he’d just received. “They’re leaving without us.”
“That’s fine. Tell them we’ll meet them in Detroit.” Ian’s voice changed. It was commanding, like he was giving them permission to leave without him. He started to turn back toward Megan, but leaned his head back and spoke quieter, almost through clenched teeth, “and tell them not to get into too much trouble while I’m gone.”
Ian turned back to Megan with a confident, goofy grin and held out his arm in a gesture of ‘after you.’
My intuition was right; there’s something he’s hiding…who is this guy?

Interview with the Author: Liwen Ho

I recently had the opportunity to interview Liwen Ho and review her short story called The More the Merrier. She and I connected through an online community at www.CleanIndieReads.com because we both write books that fall into the New Adult (18-30 year old characters) genre/category and we’re trying to connect with other authors who write ‘clean’ stories.

The New Adult genre has been notorious for novels that have been a little risqué and those of us who write in this category are trying to change that perception. I personally write stories that are New Adult Contemporary Christian Romance, but Liwen Ho’s stories are more New Adult Contemporary Clean Romance.

I loved The More the Merrier, and I’ll include a book review at the bottom of this post, but first I want to focus on Liwen and her experience with writing New Adult fiction.

Julie: Did you know that the New Adult genre existed (characters in the 18-30 year old age range)?
Liwen: I don’t think I knew about the NA genre until after I published my first novella in 2014. When I did find out about it my impression was that it was specifically for books written about college-aged characters, but now I know the range extends to 30 year olds, too (my books feature characters in their 20s).

Julie: Did you purposefully write your novel(s) as NA? or did they just happen that way?
Liwen: I do intend for the characters in my books to be in their 20s because I really enjoyed my 20s (AKA, my life before kids!). That decade of life is so full of opportunities for personal growth, which in turn provides lots of good ideas for stories.

Julie: How many NA novels do you have available for purchase right now? How about in the works?
Liwen: I have two novellas in my Taking Chances series and one winter-themed short story available on Amazon.com. I’m currently working on the third novella in the series, which I’m super excited about sharing with readers.

Julie: What has inspired you to write NA novels?
Liwen: When I need inspiration for a book (or a reminder of what it’s like to be young again!), I watch a teen/young adult TV show or movie. I also love music (including teen pop), and listen to romantic songs while I write.

Julie: Do you have other genres that you write as well?
Liwen: I am working on a sci-fi/romance book with my hubby (and putting our marriage to the test! haha), which will be my first in that genre. I also have one children’s picture e-book out called A Rainbow of Nine Colors.

Julie: Do you publish through a traditional publisher or as an independent?
Liwen: I am an indie author and do all my own publishing and marketing, although I do have a wonderful designer who makes my book covers.

Julie: What do you find is the best way to advertise your books?
Liwen: The best way I’ve found to advertise my books is through social media. I recently participated in a couple of author meet and greets online that were organized by different writer groups I’m a part of on Facebook. They were great opportunities to meet potential readers and introduce them to my books.

Julie: Do you have a blog that readers can follow? A website? Both?
Liwen: I have a blog, www.2square2behip.com, where I write about my life as a recovering perfectionist. I’m also active on my Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/2square2behip/ and semi-active on Twitter: @2square2behip

Julie: Give us a ‘back cover’ description of your book:
Liwen: Here’s the back cover description for my book, The More The Merrier:

Fed up with a string of bad blind dates, health blogger Alyssa Wu just wants to drown her sorrows in ice cream. But there’s one more evening she must endure - a fake date with her best friend Barry Chang. They must convince her family they are in love, an act which may (or may not) be easy to pull off, thanks to the magic of some mistletoe.

This 10,000 word short story is perfect for your lunch break, workout or while you wait in line at the mall. Read it today to get in the Christmas spirit any time of the year!

Julie: I was confused about the title. Other than the cute reference to ice cream on the last page, was there other significance to it?
Liwen: Regarding the title, it also references the "more" that Barry brings to Alyssa's life in terms of fun and a different perspective on life (i.e. There's more to life than money and status).

Julie: That really helps! Thank you so much for taking the time to share your thoughts with my readers. I enjoyed reading The More the Merrier and look forward to reading more of your stories!
Liwen: Thank you for reaching out in the CIR group and for this opportunity! It's so nice to meet another NA romance author!

Book Review of The More the Merrier by Liwen Ho

I loved The More the Merrier by Liwen Ho and I wished it were longer! I know, I know, it’s called a ‘short story’ for a reason, but I really wanted to get to know the characters even more and delve into their lives. Liwen did a great job with character development, because I feel like I can really picture them in body & mind. I loved the ‘boy next door’ aspect of the story and how they were best friends before they fell in love. The best person to fall in love with is your best friend! I asked Liwen about the title because I was a little confused by it. Other than the cute reference to ice cream at the end, I wasn’t sure what she meant by the more the merrier. She told me that it’s in reference to the ‘more’ that Barry brings to Alyssa’s life in terms of fun and a different perspective on life. In other words, there’s more to life than money and status. She’s so right about that! I look forward to reading more stories by Liwen. Have you read The More the Merrier by Liwen Ho? What’s your opinion? –Julie L. Spencer
