Conservation District Administrator by Day, Author by Moonlight

Julie Spencer has a very full life managing the Gratiot Conservation District, writing grant proposals, newsletters, articles, and watershed management plans. In the evenings she goes home and writes stories. She has now published her sixth book with more on the way.

Julie has been writing since she was in junior high, but prior to publishing her first novel, The Cove, her only published work was her master’s thesis, titled GIS Approach to Identifying Areas for Preservation in the Chippewa River Watershed.

The science Julie Spencer embraces so much in her job as the Administrator for the Gratiot Conservation District is a far cry from the rock stars and love stories she writes about in her books.

“I have a lot of stories in my head and characters who talk to me,” Julie said. “Some say I’m crazy, but people still love my books.”

Amazon reviewers agree… for the most part.

“I got my first one-star review after publishing my book, The Man in the Yellow Jaguar. It’s about a 25-year-old woman who falls in love with a man twice her age. The reviewer called it ‘awkward’. Oh well, can’t win ‘em all.”

Julie’s books mostly earn four and five-star reviews and most reviewers seem to love that her stories usually contain a big twist they didn’t see coming. That, Julie says, is the best compliment she can get.

Writing has always been a passion, but Julie didn’t really take it seriously until people starting reading her stories and asking where they could purchase her books. Seeing no local bookstores within an hour drive, Julie made her stories available on Amazon as paperbacks and Kindle versions. She always carries a box of paperbacks in her car in case someone wants a signed copy.

The genre of Julie’s stories is a little unconventional and barely exists. She writes mostly New Adult Clean Contemporary fiction, but has several non-fiction projects in the works.

“Almost all my stories contain some sort of Christian slant, although they don’t fall into the traditional Christian fiction market. I don’t shy away from controversial topics like drug abuse and the sanctity of marital relationships. I write about rock stars touring the world, returned veterans struggling with PTSD, and a youth minister in an inner-city church in Nashville who also happens to play drums in a rock band. I’m a bit of a square peg in a round-hole publishing market.”

None of her fiction writing has anything to do with soil and water conservation. Julie’s education is in geography, environmental analysis, map making, earth science and land use planning. She has a Master’s of Science in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and loves writing grant proposals almost as much as writing stories.

Julie has also been doing some public speaking about her work here in central Michigan. She shared results of the Pine River septic study from last year at the State of the Bay Conference in Bay City in September, serves on an invasive species task force with the Saginaw Bay Cooperative Invasive Species Management Area (CISMA), and was chosen to serve on an advisory council for a two year grant project in partnerships with the Great Lakes Commission (GLC), Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI), Institute for Water Research (IWR), U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and Michigan State University.

“How I was selected to be on an advisory council for a project called Researching Effectiveness of Agricultural Programs (REAP), I have no idea. I think it all stems back to the pilot program we conducted over the past four years called the Bad River Watershed Sedimentation Reduction Program funded by GLC. I guess we were successful in our project if they are now implementing it at the regional level. The Great Lakes Basin is a pretty big watershed! I’m honored to have the opportunity to serve.”

What’s Julie’s favorite book? The prequel to her Buxton Peak trilogy, appropriately titled Buxton Peak: The Early Years.

“Most of the Buxton Peak series takes place when my rock stars are adults, but The Early Years starts when my main character, Ian Taylor, is only eight years old. He is identified as a child prodigy who can play any instrument and goes on to start a rock band at the age of fourteen with his three best friends. By the end of the series, they’ve traversed a lot of challenges. A recovering addict, a Mormon rock star, an atheist and an inner-city youth pastor… what could possibly go wrong?”

His plan backfires when Megan finds out who he really is and decides she doesn’t want to live her life in his spotlight, with all the baggage that comes with it. She just wants to live a quiet life in rural Michigan with a normal husband and family.

Can she forgive Ian for his deception (and embarrassing her on live television)? Is she willing to give up her dreams in order to follow his? Or will Ian throw away everything he’s achieved to stay in her life?

Will Ian stand beside his mates, letting their problems become his problems? Can they pull together as a band? Or will the pressures of stardom rip them apart?

The Cove by Julie Spencer Free on Kindle August 1st-5th 2016

In honor of the Summer Olympics, and because the main character in The Cove is a famous Olympic swimmer, Julie Spencer is offering her novel, The Cove free on Kindle this week only.

Here is a blurb about The Cove:

Some accomplishments are easier than others…

For Olympic swimmer Gail Pederson, gold medals came easy. Finding true love and marrying him in the temple? Not so easy. Especially with three men competing for her attention, and temptations leading her further and further from her goal.

Choices have consequences, and each choice Gail makes affects all four of them. One choice changes their lives forever, and leaves unexpected consequences in its wake.

Innocence lost, promises broken, and friendships destroyed. Gail may choose how to live her life, but she can’t choose the consequences.

Here is an excerpt from The Cove:

“Why did you do that?” Gail stood in his lit doorway, dripping wet in her designer swimsuit. Todd kept the screen door closed between them, anger in his eyes and a scowl on his face. Gail pushed the door open and stomped into his house, leaving water all across his linoleum floor. He closed his eyes, took a deep breath, then grabbed the kitchen towel from the handle on the stove. As he stooped down to wipe up the mess, she grabbed her long hair in her hands and wrung the water from it so that it left an even bigger pool of water beside her. He paused, clenched his hand around the towel and wiped up that mess as well. When Todd stood up, he tossed the towel at Gail’s chest.
“Dry yourself off.” Todd snapped at her. “You’re making a mess in my kitchen.” He walked back over to the counter where he had been making himself a sandwich. How can he possibly be hungry after all that food at the country club?
“Why did you have to show up there anyway?” Gail demanded.
“I was invited!” Todd turned back to her with fierceness in his eyes. “By your fiancé!” He spat the words at her and she flinched back from his accusing eyes. He stepped away from the counter and crossed the room to her. She was glad he’d put down the knife he’d used to cut the salami for his sandwich. Not that she thought he would ever really get so mad he might hurt her, it just would have felt a little more threatening.
“Stephan invited… you? Why?” He ignored her question.
“Do you have any idea how much Patrick loves you? How much it’s going to hurt him when he finds out that you’re engaged to someone else?”

Buxton Peak Book One: Who Is Ian Taylor? Twitter Challenge

My new novella, BuxtonPeak Book One: Who Is Ian Taylor? was greatly influenced by the latest CD by One Direction, called Made In the A.M. and by the rock band Daughtry.

In my mind, Ian Taylor looks like Niall Horan from One Direction.

The band Buxton Peak sounds like the rock band Daughtry.

My goal today is to try to get Niall Horan, One Direction, and/or Daughtry to Re-tweet one of our Tweets!

If enough of us Tweet and Re-tweet about Niall Horan, OneDirection, and Daughtry in connection with my new novella Buxton Peak Book One: Who Is Ian Taylor? it might get their attention.

If One Direction Re-tweets something, it will go out to (are you ready for this?) 28.9 Million people!

Please help me make this happen by sharing one or more of the following:

What Is New Adult Contemporary Christian Genre?

What is the New Adult (NA) Contemporary Christian genre all about, and why am I embracing it? To say ‘I found my niche’ is an understatement! I’ve been writing in this category for years but just didn’t know it existed. Then I found out that it didn’t exist prior to about 2012, and still barely exists!

When people ask me what genre my novels fall into, I have always struggled. Well, they’re at a Young Adult (YA) reading level with a very mature theme and college-age characters, but they’re also very Christian-themed books. They don’t really fit into the YA genre because they involve adult physical relationships. You can pretend to be shocked if you want, but (newsflash) even Christians have sex! Preferably after marriage, but that too brings up real-life struggles of the difficulty of staying chaste prior to marriage, especially in a world that criticizes that very pretense. It’s not the easiest thing to accomplish, and I address that in several of my novels, possibly all of them.

A few days ago I asked a question on one of my online communities (on Facebook) about how to get a book published in that general description, and someone pointed out that my book probably falls into the category of New Adult (NA) rather than YA. I didn’t know such a thing existed, so I started doing some research. It turns out that my novels fit the category almost perfectly!

By the way, the readers of NA fiction are not necessarily new adults (in that age range)! I’ll explore that later in this blog post, but first let’s examine what makes a novel fit into this category. These are according to Deborah Halverson in her book Writing New Adult Fiction.

Here are the nine traits that distinguish NA fiction from teen fiction or fiction for adults:
(Those of you who already read my novels will be nodding your head reading each of these!)

  1. Main characters between the ages of eighteen to twenty-five (although some online communities claim 18-30 is the age range)
  2. Themes related to identity establishment (characters learning who they are and what they want out of life)
  3. Independence as a story driver (characters learning to take responsibility for themselves, their own actions, and their problems)
  4. A self-focused perspective (new adults are often focused on their own needs, wants, dreams, and interests)
  5. Heightened sense of change & instability (this stage in life is naturally full of change)
  6. Clash of high expectations and harsh reality (optimistic characters who aim big and mess up even bigger!)
  7. Peer-heavy social circles (parents are nearly out of the story, peers become the new ‘family’)
  8. Significant romances (beyond the ‘first kiss’ of teen years, these relationships are intense, often include marriage and sex)
  9. New adult relevant circumstances (may include temporary living arrangements, short-term jobs, fluid social circles, unfamiliar activities and settings, and financial stress)

If you’ve read my books, you are probably already aware that they are indeed New Adult novels! But, from where did this NA category originate? Crossover readers became writers! What is a crossover reader, you ask? Basically, the same group of readers who propelled the Twilight series and Harry Potter series into superstardom.

Crossover readers, as defined by publishing market research firm Bowker in September of 2012 were 18 years or older, purchasing YA books for themselves, not to give as a gift to a teen. The largest segment of these readers were thirty- to forty-four-year-olds. Simple escapism is cited as the reason for their choosing these stories, as well as nostalgia for a simpler time in their lives.

When crossover readers ran out of Twilight novels (the series ended, I know, we’re all still crying!) they started writing stories that they wanted to read. That’s exactly what happened to me! I wrote The Cove in the summer of 2011, before this genre even existed! No wonder I couldn’t define its genre or convince a publishing company to embrace it!

The largest group of readers of NA fiction are that same crossover audience that took YA to the top of the industry, with college-age readers coming in second, and some advanced teen readers bringing up the rear. My readership includes all of those and more. I have a lot of teens who love my novels, several people who are old enough to be my mother who love my stories, and everything in between.

What about the Contemporary Christian aspect? Pretty much all of my novels include my church! It’s as simple as that. You write about what you know and it’s difficult to separate yourself from your core values. My core values include my walk with Christ, and my membership in my church. Take it or leave it. I am who I am.

So, I’m working on forming communities of like-minded readers and writers so that we can enjoy each others’ stories. I’m also very open to stories that are not Christian, as long as they are clean. If I run into the ‘F’ word even once in a book, it’s going back on the shelf. Sorry. If I run into explicit sexual details, I will not read that book. I believe that physical relationships are very sacred and very special. Lovemaking between a husband and wife is almost an extension of God’s love. Anything less than that is demeaning. Sorry, that’s my opinion.

So, where do I go from here? Now that I know that my fiction has a home, I’m learning all I can about it and will be completely reevaluating my novels. This may take a little time, and I’m open for all kinds of input from you, my readers, family and friends. If you’ve already read my novels and want to help me revise them, give me your feedback! What did you like? Hate? Wish I would change? Because now’s the time to do that! If you have not read my novels, would you like to? Several of my novels are not yet published and I can give you sample chapters that you can read and provide your opinions. I value opinions!

My study about New Adult fiction will involve a book I found called Writing New Adult Fiction by Deborah Halverson. I’ll update my blog as I come across interesting details that I want to share! Would you like to come with me on this journey of discovery? What’s your opinion? - Julie L. Spencer

The Cove by Julie L. Spencer

My first novel, The Cove is now available on Amazon as a paperback or Kindle version. But what is it?

The Cove is a New Adult Contemporary Christian romance about an Olympic swimmer named Gail - a selfish, spoiled brat who destroys the lives of the three men who love her!

Okay, I’m being overly dramatic. But seriously, she’s not a very nice person.

From page one it’s very obvious that she’s going to end up falling in love with Todd. I’m not giving away the plot with that tidbit of information.

But she starts off the story by getting engaged to a man who she doesn’t really love (Stephan) at a time when she’s supposed to be waiting for her boyfriend (Patrick) to return from the Philippines where he’s been serving as a missionary.

Todd is Patrick’s best friend and is furious with Gail when she gets engaged to Stephan, understandably. They get into an argument and then they fall in love. End of story.

Okay, just kidding! That’s the beginning of the most confusing four months of Gail’s life. Now she’s waiting for Patrick, engaged to Stephan (by mistake) and in love with Todd. Except she doesn’t realize that she’s in love with Todd, until it’s too late.

One bad choice leads to another and then another and soon she’s in way over her head - pun intended! Several bonfires, one world championship swim meet, and a few trips to the cemetery, and this story takes on a life of its own.

Grab your box of Kleenex before you get to chapter nineteen, and don’t let the kids read chapter eleven! Have you read The Cove yet? What’s your opinion? –Julie L. Spencer

Book Review of The Cove by the Author Julie L. Spencer

I’ve written many book reviews over the years for others. Now I have finally published my first novel, The Cove and I decided to write a book review of it! I’m highly analytical in my reviews and want to approach this one in a similar manner. I like to analyze the characters, plot structure, a little bit of plot summary, how I felt when reading the novel, and what I liked & disliked. I also like to give an indication about whether the book was predictable and whether I’d read it again. Before I begin, I want to address the biggest criticism I’ve received about The Cove. I’ve been told that it doesn’t explain well enough the jargon that I use with regards to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. There is some truth to that in that there are a few uses of jargon in the first few pages that are more ‘foreshadowing’ and if the reader continues reading, a good deal of the confusion would be cleared up. I’ve also been told that the beginning of the book is a bit slow, but that if you could get past the first couple of chapters, you won’t be able to put it down. I don’t see that personally. But, I’m a bit biased! Now, on to the actual book review:

The Cove is a unique novel. I’ve never found a book quite like it. Not to insinuate that it is better or worse than any other novel, I’ve just never found one like it. It is too romantic to be a Christian novel but way too Christian (and clean!) to be a romance novel. It’s a bit scandalous in that the two main characters enter into an inappropriate relationship prior to marriage. But that is one of the main themes of the story; that waiting for intimacy until marriage is a very difficult thing to do. Another main theme is that the power of repentance is real and important! Another unique characteristic of The Cove is that the main female is not a heroine! She is a selfish, spoiled brat who destroys the lives of the three men who love her! Most people will not relate to her and will not like her very much. That’s okay. The reader falls in love with Todd, who is the real protagonist in the story, and the reader feels sorry for the other two gentlemen who (for some reason) love Gail. The plot of The Cove has a couple of interesting twists and at least one surprise that either shocks the reader or leaves them a feeling of ‘I knew it!’ There is a happy little ending that ties things up nicely, a lot of romance, and even a few (chapters worth of) tears! I’ve read The Cove many times, and would read it again in a heartbeat. I highly recommend it! Have you read The Cove? What’s your opinion? –Julie L. Spencer
