Movie Review of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, Part One

It is the wee hours of the morning as I write to share my opinions and a movie review of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, Part One based on the bestselling novel Breaking Dawn by Stephanie Meyer. A group of my friends, along with several thousand of my fellow Twi-hards, have stayed up late to watch the Midnight premier of this much anticipated movie event.

It's the final book of the Twilight series and they've broken the book into two movies. In this first movie Bella officially marries her Edward. They honeymoon on Esme's Island and it is paradise. I have envisioned what this island would look like in my mind for so long, and they painted my picture perfectly! I think someone should use that island and put a nice bed & breakfast there and rent it out as a vacation package! It's amazing! I hated Bella's white bathing suit though, ugh! Also, Edward didn't seem to sparkle at all the whole time they were on the island. Aren't vampires supposed to sparkle in the sun? For the most part, the honeymoon scenes were tastefully done as honeymoon scenes go. Didn't really need to see the bed breaking...but I know there are millions of screaming Twilight fans who disagree with me!

I think Taylor Lautner deserves an Academy Award for his performance when he learns that Bella has 'died' and for the scene where he imprints. It was my favorite part of the movie, by far.

Other thoughts: I wasn't impressed with the casting of the Denali sisters. They didn't fit what my mental picture held, and Bella's wedding dress was way too modern. I thought it was supposed to be from the early 1900's. I liked the lace, but that was about it. I loved seeing Stephanie Meyer smile at Bella as she walked down the isle! That was priceless. I didn't like all the references to drinking. That was not in the book, and I don't think it was what Stephanie would have wanted. I don't know...maybe that's just my prudish ways!

I can’t believe we have to wait until next year to see Part Two! If it’s as good as Part One, it’s going to be amazing! What's your opinion?

I look forward to the release of The Twilight Saga Breaking Dawn Part One: The Official Illustrated Movie Companion coming on December 13th, 2011. It can be pre-ordered here on Amazon!

Continued Look at the Nomads in The Twilight Saga: The Official Illustrated Guide

Let's continue our evaluation of the nomad vampires in The Twilight Saga: The Official Illustrated Guide. Charles and Makenna are an interesting pair of nomads. They both chose to become vampires; Charles to stay with Makenna forever, and Makenna to follow with her family’s tradition. They felt that having a vampire in the family was a way to stay safe and prosperous. Every other century, someone from the family would be chosen to join “Uncle Luca” as family protectors. Makenna was one of these chosen individuals. Interestingly enough, Renata was a previously chosen member of the family who was later adopted into the Volturi clan. We meet her more closely in Breaking Dawn. Renata was who asked Charles and Makenna to come and “witness” on behalf of the Volturi when it was suspected that Renesemee was an immortal child. Once it was shown that she was not, Charles and Makenna chose not to stay with the Volturi.

The Seattle Newborns in The Twilight Saga: The Official Illustrated Guide

If you’ve read The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner, then you should know quite a bit about the newborn vampires in Seattle. If nothing else, I’m assuming you’ve read Eclipse where Bella gets a crash course in how to defeat an army of newborns. Unfortunately, because Eclipse is told from Bella’s perspective, we don’t learn a lot about the individual vampires in Riley’s coven. We know that Victoria created all of the newborns, and that Riley was in control of training them and keeping track of them. We also know from Eclipse that he didn’t do a very good job! But, in Riley’s defense, he wasn’t well trained either. We also meet Bree Tanner in Eclipse. If you haven’t read her story, The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner, I highly recommend taking a few minutes to get to know her. Once you become friends with Bree, you’ll wish her story ended a little differently. Warning: If you decide you’ll head upstairs to bed “at the end of this next chapter” you’ll be up all night. Bree’s story is called a novella, and it is all one long chapter. But it’s fabulous! So enjoy!

Okay, so back to Riley’s coven in Seattle. There were a few key things that the newborns did not know about. They didn’t know that there were rules to being a vampire. They had never heard of the Volturi and they were unaware that their behavior would eventually bring upon them the wrath of the Volturi Guard. They were told that they had to stay inside during the day or the sun would burn them. They had never met or seen Victoria. They didn’t even know her name. All they knew about her was that she was the source of the immense pain they had first felt during the vampire transformation, and that she could come back and hurt them again at any time.

Contrary to the movie The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, Riley was not from Forks, Washington; he was born in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Also, Victoria did not meet him in Seattle; she found him on campus at Oregon State University where he was in his freshman year of college. She claimed that she loved him, but what she really wanted was his protection because he looked large and strong. She kept him in the dark about a lot of the vampire rules, told him half-truths, and put him in charge of taking care of the newborns. Riley never knew about her repeated trips to Forks, her trip to see Laurent, her knowledge of the werewolves, or her reason for wanting to attack the Cullens. In fact, he thought she just wanted protection from the Cullens because they were after her for hunting on their land. Anytime Riley and Victoria discussed plans of attack, they were always in the abstract. She purposely never made any firm decisions, as she knew that would alert Alice.

There were three reasons why Victoria sent Riley to Forks to get Bella’s scent. First, she knew that by providing Bella’s scent to the newborns, she was marking her true target. Second, she sensed that Riley was getting impatient with her, and lastly she was testing Alice’s vision to see if Riley could get in and out of Forks without alerting Alice. It worked. Alice was not alerted to their coming until Victoria decided it was time for the newborns to attack. Riley helped finish the training, brought them to the field where they were to fight, and then left the newborns alone to help Victoria deal with the one "key member of the coven" who had hidden to avoid the fight. He never knew that the ultimate target was Bella, or why Victoria wanted her dead – until it was too late!

There were more newborns in Seattle. We’ll learn about them next time…

James, Victoria, and Laurent in The Twilight Saga: The Official Illustrated Guide

James made a deal with a devil, so to speak. We all know he was a skilled tracker, but he was that way even before he was changed. He was always up for a bet or a dare, but he competed with the wrong Frenchman one night. The test was to release a deer into the woods, wait an hour, and then track it. The Frenchman brought back the deer in record time and James cried foul, claiming that the man must have some secret power. He claimed that if the playing field were even, he could beat the Frenchman at his own game. So, instead of killing James, the man bit him and said he’d take on a rematch in a decade or so. Let’s just say, the Frenchman never got his rematch, but James won the bet.

The Twilight Saga: The Official Illustrated Guide shares a great deal more information about how James met Victoria. He was a skilled tracker, but she was skilled at evasion. Because she had been abused as a child, she had learned the art of hiding and that carried over into her vampire life. He spent years trying to get close to her only to be frustrated over and over again when she would slip away. Victoria had learned not only the skill of evasion, but also to be suspicious of other vampires. Having watched her original coven of six female vampires decimated by the Volturi, Victoria had no desire to trust anyone. Once they finally met, she was attracted to James’ gift as a tracker because it was a mirror of her own gift of evasion. She enjoyed the security she felt in James’ presence.

As we know, James was destroyed at the end of Twilight and Victoria spent all of New Moon and most of Eclipse trying to avenge his death. When she first created Riley and a small army of newborns it was merely for protection, not as an offensive. She didn’t get the idea to use the newborns to go against the Cullens until she passed through Texas while Edward was tracking her. Jasper does a good job of telling Bella the concept of newborn armies in Eclipse, and The Twilight Saga: The Official Illustrated Guide offers little additional information during this sectional reading about Victoria. For a better detail, check out the section about Jasper.

Laurent was the other member of James’ coven. We learn relatively little about Laurent during the Twilight books, so this was an interesting selection for me. Laurent was the third son in an aristocratic family in France. He loved being at court and was always seeking the next level of importance. He had a knack for figuring out the most important person in a room and attaching himself to that person. When he met an ambassador from Russia, he could tell the man was more powerful than anyone he had ever met and was thus drawn to him. When Laurent learned the truth about this Russian diplomat, he begged the man to change him to a vampire so that he could be just as powerful. Once he was a vampire, Laurent realized there were many who were even more powerful. He sought out the Romanians but found that they had little desire to expand their coven. He then sought out the Volturi, but because he had no unusual powers the Volturi didn’t want him either. When he met James and Victoria, he was drawn to them because of their abilities and stayed with them for a time. When they came across the Cullens, Laurent automatically knew he was on the wrong side of the fight and was happy to switch sides. We know very little about his time with the Denalis other than that he gathered as much information about the Cullens as he could and used it against them when he realigned with Victoria. The one powerful force he never anticipated was that of the wolf pack, and this is what ultimately led to his demise.

There is so much more information about James, Victoria, and Laurent that it would take a very long time to go into any more detail than this. This section alone would make the whole book of The Twilight Saga: The Official Illustrated Guide a good read!

Next we will travel to Mexico and then back to Europe for a closer look at the Romanians. From there we’ll study the vampire hybrids and then it’s on to explore the Quileute reservation! I’m really enjoying this book!

Day Four of Reading The Twilight Saga: The Official Illustrated Guide

Wow! I just learned so much about Esme! The Twilight Saga tells us very little about this important supporting character. Whereas, the end of Twilight, and into New Moon, shares a good deal of information about Alice, Twilight shares Carlisle’s story (although this story is not shared in the movies until New Moon), and Eclipse tells us all about Rosalie and Jasper, none of the books share Esme or Emmet’s stories.

Did you know that Esme fled an abusive marriage while pregnant for their son? She hid in a small town in Wisconsin while waiting for her baby to arrive and worked as a school teacher, passing herself off as a war widow. When her baby boy died just two days after his birth, she jumped off a cliff intending to kill herself because her life felt hopeless. Carlisle found her barely alive. She remembered him from when he treated her broken leg ten years prior. She always held him in high esteem as the perfect gentleman and the type of man she wanted to marry. She wasn’t upset with him for changing her and fell in love with him right away.

Emmett was a bit of a wild teenager from Tennessee who drank, gambled, and was a womanizer. But, he was a big help to his family, who struggled to make ends meet. He was a big, strapping twenty year old who was a good hunter and woodsman. It was on a hunting trip in the Smoky Mountains that he was mauled by a bear and nearly died. When Rosalie found him, he thought that another bear was fighting with the first bear. Then when Rosalie picked him up and he felt like he was flying through the air because she was running so fast, he thought she was an angel. Once changed into a vampire, he had trouble with the vegetarian diet and the family had to move frequently because he couldn’t control his appetite. Another interesting tidbit about Emmett: Edward helped him donate a small fortune to Emmett’s family by leaving a bag of money on their doorstep.

Near the end of Twilight (the book, this is not shared at all in the movie), Bella learns a lot of information about Alice’s past when James taunts her about the human girl who got away from him before he could kill her. It turns out; Alice could predict the future even before she was a vampire and saw him coming to kill her. She confided in her only friend, who was a groundskeeper at the insane asylum where she lived, who also happened to be a vampire. Together they decided to change her in order to save her life. Sadly, James killed her friend the vampire (the book does not share his name) when he tried to defend Alice. By then it was too late; Alice had gotten away. This, however seems weird to me because James is said to be a “Tracker” which to me indicates that he could have found her if he had really wanted to. Maybe her ability to see the future gave her the chance to see a way to escape that would not lead him to be able to find her. This theory is unproven however, since Stephanie does not share those details with us. It’s just my theory.

Anyway, when Alice woke up she had no memory of her life prior to becoming a vampire, so she didn’t know any of this until James told Bella and Bella told Alice. As it turns out, Alice had predicted that her mother was going to be murdered and then predicted that her father and future step-mother planned the murder and were going to murder her as well. The people in the town all considered her a witch and thought she was putting curses on people when she predicted that they were about to die in an accident or something. After she went around town telling everyone that her father and new step-mother wanted to kill her, they all thought she was crazy. For this reason, it was really easy for her father to just tuck her away in an insane asylum rather than have to murder her.

We know from the Twilight Saga that Jasper had trouble with the vegetarian lifestyle, but did you know that Esme, Emmett, and Alice did as well. Until they mastered it, they had “sporadic” success. Only Rosalie has a record “almost as clean as Carlisle’s” and has never tasted human blood.

I’m going to stop there for now, but will probably post another blog later this evening, as I’m flying through the reading. Have you started reading The Twilight Saga: The Official Illustrated Guide yet? What’s your opinion? -Julie

How to Read Eclipse and The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner at the Same Time

Do you love Twilight beyond reason? Have you read every book in the series multiple times? Here’s a lesson on how to read Eclipse and The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner at the same time.

First, you have to do a little work. Grab yourself a red or blue pen and get ready to mark up your books. I know, sacrilegious, but get over it. This is not a perfect system, and maybe someone else would choose completely different locations to flip back and forth. Although the newborn vampires were created many days before the story starts, I’ve started the system about the time that Bree learns what is really going on in her new world. Near the time when the Newborns reach the clearing, you’ll be flipping back and forth every couple of pages. Pay attention, because not all of the references start “at the top of the page”; many start in between two paragraphs. Warning: do not try to read the books back and forth until you have made all these notes in both books. Have fun!

Let’s start with Eclipse. Turn to page 267, the beginning of Chapter 12: Time. Write at the top of the page “Go to Page One of The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner” (for now, let’s shorten this to “Bree”). Next go to page 310, the beginning of Chapter 14: Declaration. Write at the top of the page “Go to Page 76 of Bree”. Go to page 383, the beginning of Chapter 18: Instruction. Write at the top of the page “Go to Page 83 of Bree”. Turn to page 461, Chapter 21: Trails. Write at the top of the page “Go to Page 112 of Bree” Turn to page 537 and draw a small arrow in between the sentence “I scowled in Seth’s general direction.” and the beginning of the next paragraph that starts with “The newborns have reached the end of the trail…” Write the words “Stop. Go to Page 127 of Bree”. Next turn to page 567 and at the bottom of the page below the three stars, write “Stop. Go to Page 143 of Bree.” Now turn to page 570 and insert a small arrow in between the paragraph near the bottom of the page that starts and ends “My heart burst into a sprint…I couldn’t see anything past the thick pall of smoke.” and the paragraph that starts with “After a second of fruitless searching…” Write the words “Stop. Go to Page 157 of Bree.” On the next page, 571 after the second paragraph that starts and ends with “I stared at her…mirror of my future.” and before the paragraph that starts with “Then Carlisle and Jasper began…” draw a small arrow and write the words “Stop. Go to Page 163 of Bree.” Flip the page to 572 and draw a small arrow between the second paragraph that starts and ends with “Jane’s gaze moved slowly…the newborn had her head in her hands again.” and the next paragraph that starts with “I don’t understand…” Write the words “Stop. Go to Page 164 of Bree.” On the next page, 573 after the first paragraph, which ends with “…They left quite a wake of destruction in Seattle.” and before Carlisle’s response “Eighteen, including this one.” Draw a small arrow and write the words “Stop. Go to Page 165 of Bree.” On the very next page, 574 after the first one-line paragraph “Jane’s eyes narrowed, and she turned to the girl beside the fire.” Draw a small arrow and write the words “Stop. Go to Page 167 of Bree.” Turn to page 576 and find the one-line paragraph “Bree stared at her, not comprehending.” Draw a small arrow between that and the paragraph that begins with “Jane looked at Carlisle…” Write the words “Stop. Go to Page 169 of Bree.” Next go to 578 and find the words “Don’t watch,” Draw a small arrow below this and before the paragraph that starts with “I was only too eager to follow…” Write the words “Stop. Go to Page 173 of Bree.” On the opposite page, 579 at the close of the chapter write the words “Stop. Go to Page 177 of Bree.” That’s it for Eclipse.

Pick up your copy of The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner and turn to page 76. In between the paragraph that starts and ends with “Abruptly Diego looked away from me…and I saw what had startled Diego.” and the paragraph that starts with “Four figures were crossing the open field…” Write the words “Stop. Go to Page 267 of Eclipse.” Now flip to page 83 and find the paragraph that starts and ends with “Diego disappeared into the trees…Nothing out of the ordinary.” Draw a small arrow in between that and the paragraph that starts with “The sound of the thudding music…” and write the words “Stop. Go to Page 310 of Eclipse.” Now turn to page 112 and draw a small arrow just above the last paragraph which starts with “In the end, watching was boring…” Write “Stop. Go to Page 383 of Eclipse.” Next find page 127 and draw a small arrow in between the first and second paragraph just above the words “There are so many things you have yet to learn…” Write the words “Stop. Go to Page 461 of Eclipse.” The next page to turn to is page 143. Near the bottom of the page draw a small arrow in between the paragraph that begins and ends with “And then I heard the snarling…Maybe I could still save him.” and the paragraph that starts “I smelled the smoke…” Write the words “Stop. Go to Page 537 of Eclipse.” Now turn to page 157 and draw a small arrow between the paragraph that starts “You’d better open your eyes…searching for the danger hinted at in his tone.” and the paragraph that starts with “One whole field of my vision was obscured…” and write the words “Stop. Go to the top of Page 566 of Eclipse.” On page 163 after the one-line paragraph “Or did he mean this mysterious Volturi?” draw a small arrow and write the words “Stop. Go to Page 570 of Eclipse.” Turn the page to 164 and draw a small arrow just above the word “Hmm,” after the paragraph that ends in “As I hesitated…whatever was coming.” Write the words “Stop. Go to Page 571 of Eclipse.” On the next page, 165 just before the last paragraph that starts with “The small vampire who led the dark cloaks…” draw a small arrow and write the words “Stop. Go to Page 572 of Eclipse.” Turn the page to 167 and find the paragraph that starts and ends with “Jane smiled…They left quite a wake of destruction in Seattle.” Just below that, before the paragraph that starts with “She spoke of jobs and professionals…” draw as small arrow and write the words “Stop. Go to Page 573 of Eclipse.” Turn the page to 169 and find the paragraph that starts and ends with “Whoever the vampire was…I would still owe him.” and draw a small arrow just above the one-line paragraph “Jane turned to stare at me with narrowed eyes.” Write the words “Stop. Go to Page 574 of Eclipse.” Flip ahead to page 173 and draw a small arrow between the paragraph that starts and ends with “Still pretending I was Kevin…as if I were too stupid to understand.” and the paragraph that starts “Jane looked at Carlisle…” Write the words “Stop. Go to Page 576 of Eclipse.” Turn next to page 177 and draw a small arrow just above the last paragraph that starts with “This would be it…” and write the words “Stop. Go to Page 578 of Eclipse.” Sadly, we are at the completion of Bree’s story and thus her short, second life. On page 178, write the words “Go to Page 580 of Eclipse” and enjoy the continuation of Bella’s story.
